A hydrocele is an accumulation of fluid in the scrotum adjacent to a testicle. It usually arises on one side; however, a hydrocele can form on both testicles. A smooth protective tissue sac surrounds the normal testis. Usually, you would not be able to sense this. It produces a tiny amount of lubricant fluid to allow the testis to move easily. Excess fluid generally drains into your scrotal veins. If the equilibrium between the amount of fluid produced and the amount drained is shifted, some fluid collects as a hydrocele.
About 10 percent of male infants develop a hydrocele, which usually resolves without therapy within the first year. Hydroceles affect only approximately 1percent of adult males and usually go away on their own.
